Rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the best one day mountain biking adventures, the Mangapurua Track is graded at 3,with challenging bluffs and swing bridges to be crossed.
Approximately the first hour is spent climbing, then you will descend into the Mangapurua Valley and eventually down to the beautiful Whanganui River. You will bike past the abandoned homesteads of the returned servicemen who attempted to farm here after WW1,until the valley was officially closed in 1942. Maps are on sale offering some history of the farms you will pass. The track culminates in the iconic Bridge to Nowhere, part of the ambitious plan to link the Central Plateau with Taranaki, which was also abandoned.
All in all the bike ride is 35 kms and takes about 5 hours ( 3.5 for very experienced riders). You will arrive at the Mangapurua Landing on the beautiful Whanganui River at about 3.30 - 4.pm, where our jet boat will be waiting for you at your pre-arranged time.
Once you and your bikes are loaded onto the jet we will whisk you downriver to Pipiriki, with a few stops if time allows. There, our van and bike trailer meets the jet boat, ready to take you back up to the office where a hot drink awaits you and payment for the trip is made (Visa, Mastercard or Eftpos).
Finally, the van returns you to your accommodation in Raetihi or Ohakune ( 45 minute trip).
Full Circuit (using van delivery from accommodation) - $140/adult.
Without the pickup and dropoff to your accommodation, $100/adult.
Due to the challenging nature of this track it is not recommended for children under 13 yrs, or inexperienced adults.
Note:Bikes are not provided: excellent bike hire is available in Ohakune if necessary, see elsewhere on this website.
