Acres of rolling farmland, tranquil forest reserves, stunning alpine lakes and harsh volcanic landscapes can all be found all within an hour’s walk of your accommodation and whether it’s an afternoon stroll with the family or a multi-day high altitude trek you are after, we are lucky to have two Great Walks in the region, so checkout the Whanganui Journey and Tongariro Northern Circuit

Among the best trails in the region are Ohakune Old Coach Road,  Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the Round the Mountain Track and the Ruapehu Crater Lake walk which are all in easy reach of the township and with the great selection of accommodation, bars, restaurants and other facilities that Ohakune has to offer there is no better place to base yourself if you are thinking of walking them.

Facilities & Services
Many accommodations can provide maps and trail information, transfers to trail heads, packed lunches and secure drying rooms and most of the local bars and restaurants are tramper-friendly. With New World supermarket, Ohakune Pharmacy and a selection of camping and hiking supply stores all handily located around the main shopping area, Ohakune is a great place to stock up before you head off into the wild.

Parking
Whilst most trails do have parking sites, please bear in mind that remote trails also have remote car parks which can sadly be a target for thieves. Take the worry out of your day by taking a convenient transfer from one of the excellent providers in the township, many of which can also offer more secure private parking or collect you from, and drop you off at, your accommodation.
If you do choose to take your vehicle with you, always lock the doors, close all windows and never leave any valuables on show.

Guided Walks
Hiring a local guide can give you easy access to some of the lesser known trails, allowing you to experience the best of the wilderness that characterises the central North Island. A guide will also be able to offer information about the local flora and fauna as well as the history and culture of the area you are visiting to enrich your walk.
